Sinners and the Sea

Sinners Sea Untold Story Noahs

Sinners Sea Untold Story Noahs

Rebecca Kanner's debut novel 'Sinners and the Sea' provides an intriguing glimpse into the mythos of the ancient world. The choice of Noah's wife as the protagonist is a bold one, as the reader is carried away from the first page on a journey of epic proportions through the dark and brutal world of pre-flood chaos. The heroine breathes humility and hope into a story which has caught the imagination of millions of people across the ages. Her bravery and stoic fortitude become the foundation for a new world, and it is a thrill to see her character receive the recognition she deserves. In a violent and scary pre-flood world, she embodies perhaps what 'The God of Adam' had in mind when he chose only a few souls to escape his wrath. Kanner's writing is vivid and intense and brings to life a truly mythical era which is difficult to imagine, but which she handles with talent and great vigor. I look forward to what this talented writer has to offer the reader in the future.

  1. I can think of a few books in the canon of 'the other side of a biblical story'; The Red Tent springs to mind as does the lesser Joseph Heller novel "God Knows." I've never been a huge fan of any of them. So I was surprised that this story resonated with me as much as it did, and that's a testament to the writing--this book is well paced, with great characters and a story that hedges just close enough to what we all heard at church while packing in some insightful twists that allow the reader re-think to really and re-draw inspiration to what may have long grown stale.
Also, re: the negative reviews - this book encourages critical thinking, it expands the orthodox perspective on a biblical story, and it embraces universal humanity over fundamentalist dogma. If that's a problem for you, this isn't your book.

  3. In my opinion, the hallmark of a great storyteller is the ability to take any subject and fashion a compelling narrative for all readers, and not just those interested in the particular subject. Rebecca Kanner proves herself a great and compelling storyteller with Sinners and the Sea. I don't typically pick up biblical fiction, but I am checking out several new books as potential reads for my book club and landed on Sinners and the Sea. The lovely cover drew me in but the writing is keeping me engaged. Our group members love to discuss books that have multifaceted characters and themes/imagery/actions that promise an evening of lively conversation. I am three-fourths of the way through this book and already know: this is our next book! Kanner's retelling of the story of Noah's ark, with its particular focus on the lesser known wife of Noah, sparkles with insight; the writing is so vivid you might imagine yourself present in that long ago world. The book is certain to provoke discussion of what we think we know about this Bible story and what Kanner herself speculates might have been in the minds and hearts of the characters. Wow! This is one gutsy writer! I can't wait to share this find with the rest of my book group.

  4. From the beginning we know where the story is headed; it's just a matter of how we get there. Our journey with Noah's wife through faraway, savage lands, rough with violence and sex, is quite a contrast to her cloistered beginnings with her loving father. (I admit I was upset at the thought of the rising water and her dad alone and doomed.) I appreciate that, unlike other reimaginings or reboots, Noah's wife was not imbued with a wholly unrealistic modern feminist viewpoint. She just wanted to be a wife and mother, and in those times, that was what a woman aspired to. Even with her marked face and curious husband, she is the most normal woman we find in Sorum, Land of Exiles. Still, she is not without sin, nor are her sons. Noah is either devoted or fanatical, talking to God more than his family, and most likely hard to live with either way. But the choices Noah's wife makes are rooted in her fanatic devotion to her family. A thorough discussion of Sinners and the Sea is too much for a review - I've recommended this novel to everyone I know so I can discuss it with them.

  5. Forget the Bible, Rebecca Kanner's story reads more like Gandalf VS the Orcs in a Tolkien book. While Noah garners plenty of karmic points by rescuing his wife from a condemned life, things seem to balance out when he reneges on the deal he made with everyone who helped build the arc. Noah's wife never really gets the self-esteem thing but that can only be expected. Noah is 400 years old and this must be his tenth wife, so he's had plenty of practice keeping his women under his thumb. The epic voyage rips an open wound of incest and intrigue that the reader won't want to miss. Great Read!

  6. Rebecca Kanner's novel was very intriguing! I literally could NOT put it down. She is so descriptive in her writing that you are able to paint a picture in your mind as if you are actually on the ark watching the story unfold. I love her perspective of telling the story of Noah and the Great Flood through the eyes of Noah's wife. She keeps you interested as you turn every page wondering what is going to happen next! I love that each character is so unique and different from one another in their own way, but yet their interactions are unique and exciting. I definitely recommend Rebecca Kanner's novel to everyone, religious or not, a great read for people of any belief!

  7. Sinners and the Sea is one of the most riveting novels I have read in a long, long time. Rebecca Kanner's writing kept me turning pages well into the night. I deeply cared about the characters and couldn't stop thinking about them when the novel ended. The plot pacing moved with such forward momentum that it kept me hooked from chapter to chapter. I highly recommend this novel and can't wait to see what Kanner has in store for her next novel.

  8. Sinners and the Sea presents a refreshingly unexpected, imaginative exploration of this otherwise overlooked fictional opportunity. I found this haunting tale deeply moving and inspiring in a way that left me questioning my own beliefs about judgment, forgiveness, and redemption. I'm looking forward to reading more from this talented author.
